Alloy gathering of 1969
In March of 1969 people gathered near Drop City in southeastern Colorado for a three day convention. One of the founders, Steve Baer visualized that the event would be a "meld of information on Materials, Structures, Energy, Man, Magic, Evolution, and Consciousness" (Kirk 74). He invited individuals from all of these areas some of which include J. Baldwin, a geodesic dome designer Lloyd Kahn, and Drop City artists. These types of domes were being introduced to the counterculture at the gathering and Baldwin was able to learn and teach about the domes.

Stewart Brand remembers 150 in attendance from all over the United States and Canada. It brought together like-minded people and Baldwin recalls, "It was the first get-together and recognizing that we were a 'we' of counterculture builders" (Kirk 77). Brand was among the group in the hopes of learning and growing Whole Earth. He said this gathering "captured the spirit of alternative technology as it was just evolving from a shared sensibility and research topic into a full-fledged international movement of profound significance for the twenty-first century" (Kirk 78).
